Trailer: The Lottery

June 27, 2010 Leave a comment

I meant to post this a few weeks ago so everyone would have a chance to go support the film, but somehow it got lost in the shuffle. Usually movies like this don’t last long in theater’s so you might have to wait for the DVD. I’m not going to go in depth in this post about my feelings on the educational system, but this documentary provides an interesting look at an aspect I wasn’t familiar with until now. Below is a synopsis of the documentary.

In a country where 58% of African American 4th graders are functionally illiterate, The Lottery uncovers the failures of the traditional public school system and reveals that hundreds of thousands of parents attempt to flee the system every year. The Lottery follows four of these families from Harlem and the Bronx who have entered their children in a charter school lottery. Out of thousands of hopefuls, only a small minority will win the chance of a better future. Directed by Madeleine Sackler and shot by award-winning cinematographer Wolfgang Held,The Lottery uncovers a ferocious debate surrounding the education reform movement. Interviews with politicians and educators explain not only the crisis in public education, but also why it is fixable. A call to action to avert a catastrophe in the education of American children, The Lottery makes the case that any child can succeed.

DVD Spotlight: “Why We Laugh”

April 26, 2010 1 comment

After doing some research, it looks like this documentary debuted at Sundance last year and may have also appeared on Showtime. It is directed by Robert Townsend and features interviews with different scholars and actors. It is set to release tomorrow April 27th or you can do like me and pre-order it on Amazon today!

This is a topic that I feel needs to be discussed so I would recommend you check it out. I might do a review after I watch it. So stay tuned.
