Artist Spotlight: Andy Allo – “DreamLand” Feat. Blu & Akua Allrich – “Hard To Get”

“Escapism, chase wisdom if you dare to/In the cloud steez, lampin’ in a mansion off the nile/Breeze blowing off the days/warm smile, fell back into the maze…” – Blu

Due to current state of contemporary hip-hop and R&B, I’m constantly looking for new music. So, I decided to spotlight these two songstresses whose music has been getting heavy rotation on my iPod recently. I actually ran across Andy Allo trying to find some new Blu material (I love his verse on this song). I purchased her new album UnFresh off iTunes and it has a nice vibe. I would recommend picking it up at some point. Next we have Akua Allrich, who is a jazz vocalist out of Washington D.C. Her debut album A Piece of Mine was released in late August. I won’t go into much detail about her sound and talents, but if you would like to learn more you can check out her site Akuasings.com.

I hope you enjoy these records as much as I do.

Video: The Roots – “The Fire”

Here is the latest video from The Roots How I Got Over album, which is in stores now. The video was directed by Rik Cordero and is pretty much a mini-film. This is what Rik had to say about the song/video:

“‘The Fire’ is one of my favorite tracks off HIGO and really feels like something you’d hear in the theater. The line ‘you don’t say good luck, you say don’t give up’ inspired me to create a period piece narrative that stays true to the lyrics while adding another layer to the interpretation.”

Don’t forget to pick up the new John Legend & The Roots album Wake Up,  in stores Sept. 21st.

Throwback Thursday: Common – “The Light”

“It’s kinda fresh you listen to more than hip-hop
and I can catch you in the mix from beauty to thrift shop”

A friend of mine once asked me to pick a hip-hop song that I wish I had written. I don’t think I was able to name only one, but this was definitely on my list. We need music like this. Not enough love in our music anymore, or our community for that matter.

I’ll be posting something soon about Slim Thug’s recent comments. Until then, Enjoy.
