The Lost Reviews of 2010 Part 2: The Five

February 1, 2011 Leave a comment

I should have posted this weeks ago, but January was a very busy month for me. So… since we’re already a month into 2011, this post is strictly for archival purposes. Don’t forget to check out Part 1 and feel free to leave comments or add your favorites. Also, if you haven’t heard or don’t own any of these albums, as always… act accordingly.

The Lost Reviews of 2010 Part 1: The List

January 11, 2011 Leave a comment

Music has always served as a page marker in the book of my life. Certain songs bring back memories of where I’ve been, some allow me sit in the present, and others take me where I want to go. Last year was the beginning of a new decade, which means new stories were written.

As we turn the page to 2011, I’d like to revisit the albums that stood out and some that were overlooked.

Album Review: Kid Cudi – “Man On The Moon: The End Of Day” (Archives)

November 1, 2010 3 comments

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but I’m back. On November 9th, one of my favorite artists will be releasing his sophomore album Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager. I’ve decided to post the review I wrote for his debut album Man On The Moon: The End of Day mostly for archival purposes, but also as a teaser for the new release. I’ll be writing a review for the new album next week. There is a lot of great hip-hop music dropping this month and some must have books too (expect a post on that soon). Until then, check out my review and if you don’t already have this album.. pick up a copy before the new album comes out on the 9th!

The Making of OutKast’s Aquemini

June 26, 2010 Leave a comment

Earlier this week, Creative Loathing took a look back at one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever created. They sat down with Andre 3000, Big Boi, Organized Noise, and others to break down track by track the duo’s 3rd studio effort Aquemini. In my opinion, Outkast is the greatest hip-hop group ever and this album is definitely in my top 5 (I even have it on vinyl). XXL Magazine has done a few reviews like these, but this has to be the best one I’ve ever read. Below is an excerpt on the making of Rosa Parks & you can read the full review here.

Andre 3000: I actually submitted that beat to [Diddy’s old group] Total – ’cause I was going with Keisha from Total around that time – but they couldn’t use it, so we ended up using it.

Big Boi: I took the beat home and I remember I was in my bedroom, and I was like, ‘I got the hook!’ I was playing the music loud as hell and I was just singing the hook: ‘Aah-haah, hush that fuss!’ Like, that’s it, we need to lay it down. So then, you know how we use these metaphors, [so we named it] Rosa Parks. Boom. We always do stuff like that and shit just falls into place.

Neal H. Pogue (sound engineer): Naming that song ‘Rosa Parks’ was a big, big statement too, because it was just trying to show people don’t forget about where we’ve come from and where we are now.
